The counter

Registration, billing, and a barcode on the tube before the patient sits down. Corporate rate lists, camps, and doctor commission are part of billing rather than an afterthought bolted to it.

The bench

Every sample carries its own clock. A tube that has been out too long for the test asked of it is flagged on arrival, not discovered when the result looks strange.

Analysers connect directly. Results arrive with the lot that produced them recorded against them, so a reagent recall names the patients affected rather than a fortnight of them.

Approval

Nothing leaves without a pathologist. A critical value will not release until somebody records the call — who was told, when, and that they read it back.

Reports

Reference intervals matched to age and sex. Cumulative reports for an inpatient. Microbiology reports that suppress an antibiotic the organism is intrinsically resistant to, so nobody prescribes it.
